The Bee’s Knees

As far as fall/winter accessories go, I think legwear is the bee’s knees. In particular, I love Wolford non-control-top tights and colorful knee highs by Kate Spade. Both offer a practical, low-commitment way to add some color to your wardrobe. Say you’re on the fence about the wisdom of buying a fuchsia skirt. You could instead purchase a pair of pink tights to liven up your existing navy, gray, and chocolate brown basics.

Wolford tights are one of those rare, glorious products that seem too good to be true but actually live up to their promise. They stay soft and stay up (yeah, yeah, I thought of some Viagra jokes too). They never run, never pill, and never stretch out. Their colors never fade, and the crotch never migrates down to mid-thigh by mid-afternoon. And they don’t require tedious washing by hand—I just throw mine into a lingerie bag, pour a little Woolite into the washing machine, and set the delicate cycle. I then place them on a drying rack and that’s that. Easy peasy.

Wolford Velvet de Luxe 50 tights (unfortunately, these are not my legs)

I own “Velvet de Luxe 50” tights in matte opaque colors like hot pink, graphite, and plum, and “Winter Soft Logic” ribbed ones in always-useful dark brown, black, and charcoal. Yes, they are expensive, priced at $45 to $60 a pair. But they last and continue to look good, so consider them a worthy investment. (I’ve owned some pairs for more than a decade!) Besides, for anyone who owns a ton of skirts like I do, they’re pretty much a must-have.

Coming up in my next post: sock it to me, Kate Spade
