I don’t know about you, but to me, 2011 just flew by. And here we are on the brink of 2012! Around this time of year, it seems like everyone is doing some sort of retrospective of the past 365 days—ranging from wistful reminiscing to clear-eyed analysis…

I spent the Christmas holiday with my mom. And one morning, I observed that she had many colorful vignettes involving vegetables, plants and flowers scattered around her house…

For the Christmas holiday, my mom was kind enough to host Andrew and me at her lovely home in Exton, PA. While she hasn’t put up a tree since my dad died twelve years ago, I thought she did a fine job of decorating her house with little festive flourishes.

I’ve always loved holly as a symbol of the yuletide season. (Maybe it’s because we had a lot of holly bushes around the house where I grew up.) The shiny, scalloped green leaves and eye-catching red berries look so festive when dusted with white snow…

I totally admire those brilliant paper confectioners who transform their presents into visual feasts by using hand-printed paper (hell, they probably make their own!) and adding ephemera…

…I found the rosy-hued palette of this pile of crisp, fallen leaves to be beautiful. (And of course I loved the visual pop of color from the lone bright yellow leaf.)
