Color Blocking

The whole color blocking trend recently got me thinking about the original colored blocks…why LEGOs of course! So on my lunch hour yesterday, I went to see the LEGO® Architecture: Towering Ambition exhibition at the National Building Museum. Architect Adam Reed Tucker has created jaw-dropping, breathtaking models of some of the most iconic structures, including Dubai’s Burj Khalifa and the Chicago Spire. (No wonder he’s one of only eleven LEGO Certified Professionals in the world. I bet he never eats Cheetos or sticky buns.)

Adjacent to the main gallery was the Play Pit where visitors can build their own LEGO masterpieces. Before I had a chance to dive in, I saw these wonderful formations on the work tables:

Someone’s a really good LEGO builder

Someone’s an even better LEGO builder

The first thing that popped into my head, of course, was Prada’s memorable Spring 2011 Ready-to-Wear collection!

I wonder if it was a fellow fashionista who constructed those buildings in the Play Pit—or maybe it was a precocious five-year-old who’s gonna rock the design world someday.

LEGO Architecture: Towering Ambition runs for another year through September 3, 2012.

  1. God, I used to love LEGOS. I remember reverse-engineering a Star Wars ship someone at school had built. The hardest part was getting the wings to align. 2nd hardest: not crashing it while playing Star Wars. I guess I wasn’t that precocious a 5 yr old – the “ship” looked a lot like a short bus.

  2. I learned the word “LEGO” is derived from the Danish words “leg” and “godt,” which basically means “play well.” Quite fitting.

  3. […] At any rate, here’s my big confession: I consider this post lazy. It doesn’t involve cool patterns and visual connections. It’s not a detailed profile of some life-altering product. And […]
