Rugged Inspiration

I’ve been writing this blog for about a month now, and in case you haven’t noticed, I come up with some strange associations between seemingly disparate things. I just can’t help it—my brain sees something having to do with fashion and it often automatically links it to another idea or image from nature, animation, you-name-it. I then feel compelled to share the observations with you, my dear reader. Hopefully you find them astute; at times, you may find them totally absurd. Either way, I got a whole lot more up my sleeve…

This morning, I came across Tory Burch’s 2012 Resort Collection. The New York Times’s T Magazine style blog wrote that the collection reflected bohemian Santa Fe with its “lobster, turquoise and desert sand” tones, and described this look as an “updated rendition of a Navajo poncho”:

A fashionable poncho? I don’t think so.

Whoa! Let’s not insult Native Americans by labeling this outfit as Navajo (haven’t they been through enough?). I think Mrs. Burch (she apparently doesn’t like “Ms.”) was in fact more inspired by this rugged-yet-soft chenille braided rug:

Practical, multi-colored ruggedness from L.L.Bean

[A bit of history: I first saw that rug online three years ago when my boyfriend Andrew and I were about to move in together. I was gonna buy it to place under our flimsy $50 kitchen table from Urban Outfitters, you know, to give our new place some ambiance. Little did I know that that day was the end of my organized, pristine single-girl lifestyle and the beginning of my Cheetos-flecked, stinky-gym-socks-infused existence bliss as a couple.]

You would think I’d be a huge fan of Tory Burch. She’s a Main Line Philly girl who has admirably built a worldwide fashion empire with her eclectic, classic-with-a-Palm-Beachy-twist, colorful aesthetic. But, to put it in marketing parlance, her brand just doesn’t resonate with me. I never latched onto her tunics or Reva flats (besides, the elastic backs on those things irritate my persnickety feet). And I’m allergic to her prominent, stylized double-T logo. Yes, I admit it’s completely irrational, but at least you know I’ll never lie like a rug.
