Wide Open Spot
When you first enter our townhouse through the front door, your eyes go straight to the white space above our fireplace along the back wall:
That key area just begs for a special piece of artwork—something that will grab your attention and draw you in. I was originally leaning towards buying a poster of Jasper Johns’ Flag painting. My thought was that the geometry of the bricks would cleverly complement the stripes in Old Glory. (Yeah, I was being way too cerebral about it.) But all that flew out the window the moment I came across this photograph for sale on lusternyc.com:
Holy crap! This image struck me as the perfect fit for that blank canvas. There’s one primary pop of color, which is my signature style. It feels modern yet retro. Fashionable and fun. Cheeky and chic. Plus, it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.
AND, it reminds me of this photo from Prada’s Spring/Summer 2012 ad campaign shot by Steven Meisel:
So of course before placing my order, I ran it by Andrew who gave an enthusiastic thumbs up. Can’t imagine why.
P.S. In case you were wondering, I discovered the lusternyc.com website via my favorite designsponge blog where the Brooklyn home of Luster’s owners was the focus of a Sneak Peek house tour.
Update on May 8, 2012: I just saw the cover of the new H&M Summer 2012 magazine via fashiongonerogue.com. It’s an edgier take on the white-sunglasses-and-red-lipstick look:
Update on September 29, 2012: The search is finally over! We went with this Andy Warhol giclee print. It’s called “After the Party” which hints at what may have happened before, during, and after the festivities. Its size fits that space perfectly, and I like the subtle perspective.
Thanks Jennifer – That print is amazing in person i can assure you x
