Clash of the Tartans
I wasn’t able to pay as much attention to the Spring collections as I would have liked. But at least I know that florals are a big trend this season. As you may know from a previous post, flower prints really aren’t my thing. That’s OK though because I’m currently preoccupied with plaid—tartans to be exact.
When I think tartan, two distinct images always pop into my head. The first is this iconic photo of Linda Evangelista taken by Arthur Elgort for the September 1991 issue of Vogue:
The second is this dress by Alexander McQueen. He created his own wool tartan for his Widows of Culloden autumn/winter 2006-07 collection:

Haunting beauty: dress of McQueen wool tartan.
I’m actually not obsessing over tartan prints as a sartorial statement, like kilts or golfer Ian Poulter’s pants. It’s more for home décor. Maybe it’s because my parents kept a Royal Stewart lambswool throw in our family room for years (my mom still has it), but tartan blankets represent warm coziness to me.
So when I saw this photo on the Design*Sponge blog several weeks ago, I fell in love with the color combo of orange, hot pink, green and black:

l’objet du désir.
Luckily, another commenter had already asked about it. After a couple of quick searches on Google and Amazon (the brand is Lochcarron), I was happily on my way to buying my own:

Truth be told, I ended up ordering not one but three blankets. They’re timeless and classic. I have no regrets.

A pile of plaid.
I keep the blue-and-green one in my office (our basement gets pretty chilly). The one that originally caught my eye lives in our “Gehry” room. And the dusty rose one accessorizes the living area on the main floor. I’ll take a photo when our sofa finally arrives next month. (That day can’t come soon enough!)
